Posted by Securr Blogger on
E-waste, a term for discarded electronic and electrical devices, poses a significant environmental threat due to the presence of hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and other toxic chemicals. These materials can have a detrimental impact on the environment if not disposed of properly. As a municipality, how can you increase the amount of e-waste that is collected in your community? And can that collection be done affordably? Let’s take a closer look. Making e-waste collection more accessible Municipalities can increase the amount of e-waste collected for recycling by implementing various strategies such as: Offering convenient and accessible e-waste drop-off locations or curbside collection services for residents and businesses. Keeping recyclable materials out of landfills is a top priority for many municipalities. That’s why Springfield, Missouri, has come up with an innovative way to encourage residents to take recycling more seriously. With funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, they hope to host tours of the local landfill to help people gain a new perspective on throwing things away. Significant increases in landfill tonnage cause concern According to the Springfield News-Leader, the city of Springfield conducted a waste composition study in 2017. They discovered that more than 70 percent of trash in their local landfill could have been recycled instead of thrown away. In the five years since the study, their landfill tonnage has nearly doubled from 650 tons a day in 2017 to up to 1,200 tons a day now. They’ve determined that at this rate, their landfill will be at capacity in approximately 50 years. Bipartisan Infrastructure Law offers money for education and outreach Springfield leaders are looking...
Not Sure What to Recycle? There May Soon Be an App for That!

Nobody wants their recycling to end up in a landfill. But that’s what often happens when recycling gets contaminated with items that cannot be recycled. That’s why we’ve created a line of recycling containers that help take the guesswork out of recycling – including multistream recycling bins featuring society-wide standardized labels from Recycle Across America. What’s even more exciting is that there soon may even be an app available called RecycleBot to eliminate any confusion someone may have about the recyclability of an item! What is multistream recycling? Multistream recycling is a process that separates recyclable materials into different categories for proper sorting. This process helps to ensure that each type of material is properly processed, making it easier to recycle and reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. How is this different than single-stream recycling? The traditional single-stream recycling process involves collecting all recyclables in one bin, which then goes to a recycling center where it’s...
